High-tech features like Bluetooth-enabled height control paddle that connect to smartphone app; users can store their own height preferences and health coach settings in their phones. Longest warranty on any standing L-Desk (10 years on base, 5 years on desktops).
Very slight groove between the two tabletop sections, but it does preserve ergo-contouring all around every edge of the desk (not found on any other sit-to-stand L-desk) and makes it possible for the side table to be easily swapped from left to right anytime.
The Sit-Stand L-Desk, Reimagined
In 2018 iMovR redefined the sit-stand desk when it introduced the Lander desk, boasting a number of industry firsts—a factory pre-assembled desk, entirely made in the USA, with an advanced, Bluetooth-enabled handset and free smartphone app, and with thousands of color and size combinations. Manufactured “on-demand,” customers can order with state-of-the-art, ergo-contoured desktops in any of 16 Surf(x) 3D-lamination colors or in any of 36 species/stain options in real wood.
The 2-legged Lander desk quickly became the most highly-rated standing desk in the industry, and despite its premium price, one of the most popular. Now, iMovR is following up with the second act, introducing a new L-desk system based on the same platform as the breakthrough Lander desk.
While competitors typically offer only three to five size variations of their L-desks, in limited colors, the Lander L-desk can be customized to any of 1,920 size, shape and color combinations. Including a choice 16 colors of advanced Surf(x) 3D-laminated desktops three base colors.
Innovative Pre-Assembled Design Cuts Installation Time by 90%
While every other standing desk you can buy can best be described as an “IKEA kit,” iMovR’s regular, 2-legged Lander desk can quite literally be assembled by a child in a matter of minutes, no tools required. That’s a pretty nifty trick, for sure, but a 3-legged L-Desk is an entirely different beast. They are notoriously difficult to assemble if you don’t have an experienced installer to do it for you.
Remarkably, the new Lander L-desk is almost as easy to assemble as the standard 2-legged desk, requiring a tenth of the effort of a conventional L-shaped standing desk from the likes of Fully, UpLiftDesk, or even Steelcase or Herman Miller. Assembling these desks usually involves spending a lot of time on your back driving bolts and screws into the desk while trying not to get anything in your eyes, and often having to delicately maneuver the bulky object in a confined space.
While the Lander L-Desk does require tools, we’re only talking about inserting 4 machine bolts and 5 wood screws in order to secure the side table to the main desk—that’s it. Where a typical L-desk can easily suck up a couple of hours of assembly time (with help), we had an inexperienced member of our staff put an entire iMovR Lander L-desk together in less than 15 minutes. Of course there’s an installation video showing you exactly how to do it if you don’t like reading manuals.
The process of assembling the main desk is precisely the same as the 2-legged Lander desk, and involves no tools. Adding the factory pre-assembled side table (aka “extension” or, as they called it in the old days, the “typewriter return”) involves only one step where you have to get down on your back, to connect the two desk sections together. While you can do this on your own, it goes a little bit easier if you can get someone to help you for one minute by holding up the side table while you drive in the first couple of bolts.
The Perfect Size and Shape to Fit Any Office Space
Most L-shaped standing desk makers offer only a single depth on both the right and left sides of the desk, usually 30” on both desk sections. This can become a problem when swapping a sit-stand L-desk into an existing cubicle, where fixed-height countertops with 30” of depth on one side and 24” on the other is more or less the norm.
Because iMovR manufactures their desks on-demand in a highly-automated production process they are able to offer size options for both the main and side tables in width increments of six inches, not just on-the-foot like other manufacturers, thus ensuring a perfect fit into just about any office space.
iMovR makes the L’s main desk 30” deep like everyone else’s, but they uniquely offer the option of either 24” or 30” depth on the side table. The side table can be attached either to the left or right side of the main desk, unlike competitors’ L-desks that require this to be defined when ordering, and cannot be changed later. The flexibility to change configuration in the event you ever move your office creates some peace of mind.
The side table can be rectangular, as with all the other standing L-desks on the market, or “peninsula” shaped with a half-circle at the end. This exclusive feature of the Lander L-desk is not just a design element taken from the fixed-height world, it makes the desk much more practical for users who may seat co-workers or clients on the other side of their desk (think of the L-desks at your local bank).
Advanced 3D-Laminated Desktops in 16 Colors
When it comes to the actual desk surfaces, competitive offerings in the stand-up L-desk category run the gamut from run-of-the-mill, edge-banded, high-pressure-laminate (HPL) tops to pricier ones made of solid wood; and usually offered in only a handful of colors.
As with all of their other standing desk models, iMovR offers their exclusive Surf(x) 3D laminated desktops in 16 colors. These ultra-durable tops are visually stunning, and give the appearance of being carved from natural hardwood—yet at a fraction of the cost. The ergo-contoured edges are more comfortable to rest your arms against and stand up better to dings from chairs.
An L-desk is a major investment so you want to make sure that the desktops you install are going to last a very long time. While competitors’ offerings carry no warranty coverage on their desktops, the Surf(x) 3D lamination process iMovR uses in making their tops hermetically seals them against moisture damage and the elements. There are no exposed glue seams to dry out or to collect bacteria, and they are impervious to even the harshest of cleaning chemicals.
Even the grommet holes on these 3D tops are completely sealed, with no exposed MDF or uglifying plastic grommet caps. iMovR thus is able to provide a five year warranty on their tops but they really are heirloom quality and should last for decades. (We’ve left an iMovR desktop out in the Seattle rain, snow and freezing nighttime temperatures for more than two years now and it has yet to show the slightest sign of damage; don’t try that with any other desktop unless you want to ruin it.)
Of the 16 colors offered by iMovR, five are solids (black, designer white, northern cloud, American red and shark gray) and eight are wood grains (light maple, almond cherry, hayward cherry, shaker cherry, crossfire java, mahogany, obsidian oak and urban walnut). Three specialty colors are also offered—a daring “carbon fiber,” and two nebulae colors for when trying to maintain a consistent look with existing corporate decors from the major office furniture makers like Steelcase.
The first thing that stood out to us when we first assembled the wood grain Lander L-desk is that the grain runs in a consistent direction through both desktops. We’ve not seen this on any L-desk before, fixed height or sit-stand. This is a remarkable benefit of the 3D-lamination process that allows iMovR to change the direction of grain on the side table by 90 degrees. While this is not an issue, of course, for solid color and nebulae tops, the perpendicular wood grain directions found on competitors’ L-desk offerings can be visually cacophonous. While not something the online shopper might even notice in small product photos, we found this distinction very obvious when comparing the Lander to other brands of L-desks side-by-side.
See our Ultimate Guide to Standing Desk Surfaces for a more detailed explanation of the differences between 3D laminate and other desktop materials.
If you’ve worked at a few L-desks in the past you’ve probably noticed that there’s often times a groove in the work surface where the two desktops meet. This can be pronounced or it can be subtle, but there’s always going to be some sort of bump or groove where the two desktop surfaces meet. It’s often where loose pencils roll into, some might even call it a feature.
This presented a confounding challenge to iMovR engineers, given that their 3D-laminated tops all have an “ergo-contoured edge” on all four edges. You would think that mating two radiused tops together would result in a giant gully between them. But using a special custom-designed CNC router bit and some fancy production trickery iMovR managed to create a negative contour on the mating edge of the side table so that it meets up perfectly with the positive contour of the main desk. The result of this innovation is a barely noticeable groove that is certainly no worse than you’ll find on most fixed-height or standing L-shaped desks. And, yes, you can still use it as an ersatz pencil holder.
Bluetooth-Enabled Handset and Smartphone App
As in the 2-legged Lander desk the advanced height control “paddle” that iMovR installs on its L-desk is packed with high-tech features. Height changes are a matter of a simple upward or downward tap on the sleek paddle, with its high-res, multi-color display.
The built-in “health coach” reminds you to change posture as often as you set your notification frequency and duration, unobtrusively through either the handset’s display or push notification to your phone, or both. Studies have shown a 117% increase in standing time just by virtue of having this gentle reminder feature built into your desk.
Everything that you can do through the discretely recessed buttons on the height control paddle can also be done through the app. Even if you only use the app once to program your favorite heights and health coach notification settings, we always recommend launching it at least once if for no other reason than to click-off on the “click wrap” liability waiver that lets you just double-tap the paddle and let the desk move to its next favorite height setting without having to keep your finger on the button.
For Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification in the USA, a standing desk ordinarily cannot have a “fire and forget” feature like this for safety reasons, overwrought as they may be. iMovR’s Lander is the first standing desk in the market that retains its UL certification—a crucial item for enterprise and government employers, in particular—by virtue of this liability waiver that can be acknowledged using the smartphone app. When you see Chinese-made desks with this “one-touch” feature it is because their desks aren’t UL certified; something your employer may be very unhappy to ever learn about.
Flexibility and Upgrade Path
As we’ve already mentioned, the Lander’s side table can be swapped from left to right should your office configuration change anytime in the future—and that’s another feature totally unique to iMovR’s design. But, wait, it gets better. You can actually buy the main desk now and add the side-table later; something which just isn’t possible with any other standing L-desk. If you buy only the main desk it’ll already have the appropriate controller, power supply and pre-drilled holes for accepting the side table and third leg in the future, which is what distinguishes it from the standard 2-legged Lander desk.
If you’ve already purchased a regular 2-legged Lander desk from iMovR and are irked to have missed out on the L-Desk, don’t worry because iMovR has your back. There’s an upgrade option to make your desk a full L-Desk, if you are willing to drill a few of your own holes and switch out the 2 leg to 3 leg motor controller box. The side table is still 90% preassembled so assembly is as easy as they could make it.
American Made and Tariff-Free
iMovR chooses to make its standing desks in the USA for a variety of reasons, but chiefly for the higher quality and precision tolerances of American components. But with the new tariffs on Chinese imports the competition is about to get a lot more expensive and will likely no longer have a cost advantage over superior-quality, USA-made standing desks.
Making a choice between Asian-sourced and American-made for an L-Desk is similar to making the choice for a standard 2-legged desk, which you can read all about in our primer on How Asian-Made Standing Desks Compare to American-Made. While desk stability is of much less concern with a 3-legged desk, precision manufacturing tolerances and precision electronic controls are paramount to ensuring that the three legs move up and down in perfect unison; if one leg gets out of sync with the others the entire desk could easily break.
Because L-desks are bigger investments than standard 2-legged standing desk our advice is to always go with quality components that are sure to last a long time. One indication of quality is the warranty term a manufacturer provides on their product. Fully, UpLift and MultiTable offer 7-year warranties on their bases and zero warranty on their tops. iMovR offers an industry-leading 10-year warranty on both its bases and 5 years on the desktops, plus their standard 100-day satisfaction guarantee.
With its host of technological innovations, vast customizability, ease of installation, advanced handset and smartphone app, and its industry-leading warranty, the Lander L-Desk wins hands down in product quality and value. Yes, it costs about $500 more than Asian competitors (at least before the tariffs kick in) but well worth the small increment in price.
The L-shaped standing desk category hasn’t seen many players enter the playing field of e-commerce given their high cost and complexity. To date, most sit-stand L-desks have been sold by the office furniture giants in bulk sales to enterprise customers. The Lander L-desk will definitely give both the online sellers and the traditional “Grand Rapids mafia” (Herman Miller, Hayworth, et al) a serious run for the money. Starting at only $1,998 the Lander is a fraction of the cost of their offerings and doesn’t involve the delays and costs of professional installation.
Also unlike the traditional office furniture manufacturers, ordering an L-desk from iMovR won’t take 8 to 12 weeks to deliver. Leveraging the same on-demand manufacturing that they use for all their regular standing desks, the L-desk ships out from their Michigan factory in just one week from order.
We give the Lander L-desk the highest rating in this product category, but definitely check out our round-up of Standing L-Desk Reviews to learn more about how the competition compares. If you’re looking to save money consider a less-expensive Corner Standing Desk.
