We are currently conducting lab testing on about two dozen power modules for standing desks, both made-in-the-USA and made-in-China. As with many of our product review categories there is a stark, stark difference between the quality of domestic versus imported products, and that contrast is even more critical to illustrate when talking about electrical components that could catch fire. We put them all to the test, going beyond simple UL certification claims, to see which ones really deliver the best value for standing desk and treadmill desk users.
Because there are so many options for attaching power outlets and charging ports to the desktop of a standing desk, we’ve further divided this category into the following four sub-categories:

- Grommet-mounted power modules
- Under-mounted power modules, and
- Tabletop (free-floating) power modules

Edge-Clamped Power Modules
Edge-mounted power modules allow you to maximize your precious desktop real estate. While generally attached along the back edge of a standing desk or treadmill desk, they can theoretically attach to any edge.

Grommet-Mount Power Modules
Grommet-mounted power modules are a great way to go if you have the available grommet hole in the same diameter as the power module you’d like to buy. There is no such thing as a “standard” grommet hole size. It tends to vary by desk manufacturer, and some even offer different size holes on different desk lines.
Most common on standing desks are 3.0″ (76mm) or 80mm on larger desktops, and 1.75″ (45mm) or 2.25″ (57mm) or 60mm on smaller desktops. Some that we’ve reviewed here get as large as 4.7″ in diameter. Of course if you’re making your own desktop it’s simply a matter of having the right drill bit.
