The DNA of treadmill desk manufacturers
It’s not hard to imagine why adequately-designed units have yet to reach the market when you consider that fitness equipment manufacturers have little experience with desktop computing ergonomics and office equipment manufacturers have little experience with desktop computing “on the hoof.” Fear not. Low-cost enhancements are available for your treadmill desk setup that will overcome any serious inadequacies. It is also only a matter of time before new manufacturers come along who get the formula right by starting with clean-sheet designs. As a subscriber to WorkWhileWalking’s Desker Dispatch you’ll be among the first to learn about new products designed specifically for treadmill desk users.
Of the popular makers of treadmill desk equipment Steelcase, Signature, and MultiTable are fundamentally furniture manufacturers who OEM others’ treadmills and bundle them with their products. LifeSpan Fitness, NordicTrack, ProForm, Exerpeutic and Woodway are fundamentally sports equipment manufacturers. TreadDesk and RebelDesk have sourced low-end sports treadmills from Asia with re-packaged control consoles to fit on the desktop, and OEM their furniture options from others as well.
In the interest of fostering innovation in the industry, we here at WorkWhileWalking freely and often lend our product expertise to manufacturers who come to us for advice on how to best meet the needs of treadmill desk and standing desk users. Our role as a reviewer of all products in these categories gives us some unique insights on strengths and weaknesses of existing solutions. The company recently entering the industry that has taken the fullest advantage of our expertise is iMovR, which has set off a new branch of our industry’s evolutionary tree as the first “pure play” manufacturer.
iMovR has released best-in-class desk products that, from the outset, considered the needs of both treadmill deskers and standing deskers, without any pre-existing tether to the furniture or gym equipment industries. This is a company to watch, with some very interesting clean-sheet designs of other treadmill desk and standing desk technologies in the offing.
Full disclosure: the connection between WWW and iMovR goes farther than our typical arm’s length relationship with a vendor, by virtue of joint ownership by The Thermogenisis Group. While we are proud to be a part of the same organization so singularly devoted to promoting increased movement in the workplace – just as NBC must always disclose when covering stories about their owners Comcast and GE – we fully disclose this relationship.
