|Positives||Premium solid-wood desktop from one of only two Canadian companies that sells hardwood topped standing desks. Base has a height-adjustment range of 24"-50" with top mounted. Ships in only five business days to the Quebec area.|
|Negatives||A premium desktop, but a relatively low-quality Chinese-made lifting base makes this sort of a mish-mash standing desk, and not premium all the way. Three year warranty on the top is relatively short compared to US-made premium standing desks for which 15 years is the norm. The company is not yet set up to ship quickly to the rest of Canada or the USA.|
This is a “first look” synopsis on the Pioneer standing desk manufactured by the Burotic company based out of Quebec, Canada. A full review of their line of standing desks is coming soon.
Another Canadian Standing Desk Upstart Borne of the Pandemic
Not since the gold rush stampede through Dawson City have so many Canadian startup entrepreneurs apparently decided that they, too, must launch a standing-desk company — because, apparently not enough of them already exist? As we’ve gone about cataloging all of the entrants in our new roundup of Canadian-standing-desk companies, Burotic was the most recently added, having launched their website mid-2021. Not long after RiseDesk and EffyDesk launched.
The two things these companies all have in common, are they were a) founded by very young entrepreneurs with no prior experience in the furniture industry, b) they chose low-quality Chinese-made lifting bases to build their desks on.
Burotic, specifically, was gunning for Ergonofis — the most mature and largest of the homegrown Canadian-standing-desk companies. As Burotic’s three founders like to point out, Ergonofis’ Achilles heel is that their desks take 20-25 business days to ship out. So Burotic’s main differentiation would be that they would ship out in only five business days, by keeping the solid-wood desktops in stock rather than having them made to order. The only problem with that strategy is that unless you have very deep pockets it is very costly to keep any significant inventory depth in every species and in every size all of the time.
Thus, after the first Cyber Monday sale they were cleaned out, and as of this writing it looked like they wouldn’t have any more inventory until March of 2022. That challenges the whole thesis of quickship inventory in this premium solid-wood category, at least for a bootstrapped startup. It must raise some concern for buyers as to whether the company will be around long enough to honor its warranties.
We will not ask for product samples while the company is out of inventory for lab-test evaluation. The jury remains out on the future prospects of Burotic. We look forward to a deeper look at the company and its products once operations return to normal.
Three Similar Desk Models Which Vary Only in Specie
The Pioneer Standing Desk features a maple hardwood top, while the Achiever features a walnut top and the Visionary features a cherry one. All three desks are built on their “Aspire” electric base which is a rather basic Chinese-made lifting frame. The height-adjustment range from 24″ to 50″ with the 1-1/2″ wood tabletop mounted is better than most bases sourced out of Asia.
The company said it is in the process of sourcing a new and improved frame with better stability, but does not have it identified as yet. It is on the lookout for higher quality bases from the USA or Europe. It appears this will remain a key differentiating factor between Burotic’s solid wood desks and Ergonofis‘ (offers American-made bases) until that time arises.
