Overview

Review Summary

The Imprint Cumulus9 is good for short periods of time working in a kitchen but does not have enough support for serious use at a standing desk. However, it will fit in most anywhere due to its many size, color, and pattern options.

Rating

Expert Rating
2.5
Positives Multiple colors, patterns, and sizes to fit your decor, especially if your home office happens to be in the kitchen.
Negatives Double layer construction begins to lose buoyancy after a year or two. Too soft for serious standers wearing shoes at work. Has tendency to scoot across the floor throughout the day.

Bottom Line

2.5
The Imprint Cumulus9 is a kitchen mat designed for short stints in bare feet, not all day standing in shoes. If you're looking for an anti-fatigue mat for your standing desk, we recommend one made from 100% polyurethane that will provide the proper level of buoyancy and comfort.

Review

There are two main categories of standing mats: those meant for short-term standing in kitchens and those built to hold up for years of all-day use in an office environment. Kitchen mats are usually made of materials that will compress or fall apart in time, while, like we explain in The Real Differences Between the Best Anti-Fatigue Mats and the Worst, a good standing desk mat will be made of durable 100% polyurethane. The popular Imprint Cumulus9 Kitchen Mat is the former, so as we examine this mat, keep in mind that we are evaluating how it would perform in an office environment.

Complaints about Cumulus9 Comfort

Imprint Cumulus9 in home
The Imprint Cumulus9 is best in a residential setting.

The reason this mat is insufficient for use at a standing desk is because of its construction method. Multi-Core Technology is a fancy term for the Imprint Cumulus9’s double layer of foam—a porous layer atop a firmer one. This type of layered mat has a tendency to compress, becoming less buoyant as a standing workday wears on.

This design choice claims it will provide comfort and that users won’t sink straight through to the floor, but in our testing, there was more sinking going on than one could tolerate for extended periods of time. Products like this are cheaper options for shorter stands and offer limited comfort for most upright workers, so plan to replace it every year or two when the foam inside degrades. This mat is better suited for a residential setting than a sit-stand workstation that requires hours of support and pain relief while at a standing desk.

Imprint also claims that the Cumulus9 is designed to stay consistently flat, and we bought this claim at face value when we reviewed the product upon its initial release. However, since then, we’ve read numerous user reports of edge curling issues after a year or two of use, which creates a continuous trip hazard.

In addition, there have been reports of the Imprint Cumulus9 outer casings tearing from wear. A lifetime warranty usually indicates confidence behind manufacturer’s products. However, most people won’t bother to hassle with mailing back a degraded mat and fighting for a warranty replacement every year or two, so be sure to read up on verified user reviews (e.g. on Amazon) before selecting this product.

The Imprint Cumulus9 does have some beneficial features, though. The outer coating is waterproof and anti-microbial, and the mat is non-toxic and phthalate free. It has been tested and certified by the National Floor Safety Institute and is an American Chiropractic Association partner. Multiple size and color options provide a big plus. Three sizes, three patterns, and eight colors in total are available, making the Cumulus9 a customizable option for your home environment. However, we stress the word home here.

The Takeaway

Clearly designed as a kitchen mat, the Imprint Cumulus9 Comfort Mat is too soft for standing desk workers and will not hold up against the constant wear and tear of use with dress shoes or chairs being rolled over it. Users report performance degradation after only a year or two. Some users have also found this mat insufficiently grippy—not to the point of being a slip risk, but definitely needing an occasional repositioning after a slow scoot across the office floor. For about the same price, you could get a 5-star rated product like the iMovR EcoLast Economy Standing Mat, made of 100% polyurethane, manufactured in the USA, and certified against the issues that plague foam-core mats.
